John Louis Ward, age 94, of DuBois, PA, passed away very peacefully at his home on Tuesday, November 27, 2018. John was born on March 22, 1924, in Pittsburgh, PA, to the late George A. and Elsie (McAfee) Ward. John was educated in the Pittsburgh Public Schools and graduated in June of 1942 from South Hills High School. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He did his stateside training in Colorado and Florida following which he was deployed to England and stationed near London. He was in the 456th Bombardment Squad. He flew 53 missions as a Bombardier over Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, Ardennes, North Africa, earning citations including the Air Medal with 2 Silver Oak Leaf Clusters and 1 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, the European African, Middle Eastern Service Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars. Following his European Service, he returned to the U.S. and was discharged from the military on July 2 at Indiantown Gap Reservation. John then enrolled in the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh at its home location and graduated in June of 1950 with a B.S. degree in Health, Physical Education and Biology. His teaching career spanned 41 years in High School and Middle School grades, beginning in Summerville, PA, moving to the old Sandy High School, Reynoldsville High School, and DuBois area Schools in DuBois from where he retired in 1991. He was a dedicated Basketball Coach in all these schools and brought his teams through many award-winning seasons. John is a member of John M Reed, Lodge No. 536 Free and Accepted Masons, the American Legion Post 0392 in Reynoldsville and the First United Methodist Church Reynoldsville where he was a Sunday School teacher in John F. Black Men’s Bible Class for many years. John was an avid outdoorsman and sportsman. He was seen and recognized through his many years of jogging, was a lover of the woods and hunting, and was a dedicated golfer (his hole in 1 award held a place on the wall in his den). On September 4, 1947 in the Chapel of John Wesley Methodist Church in South Hills, Pittsburgh, he married Rose Marie McGregor and after 71 years of marriage, Rose survives him. In later years John and Rose followed the sun south and for 33 years enjoyed the sunshine and sandy beaches of Bonita Springs, Florida. Also surviving are a son Jeffrey (Denise) Ward of Reynoldsville, PA; a grandson; Christopher (Rachel) Ward of Sykesville, PA; a granddaughter; Corrie (Shawn) Welsh of Reynoldsville, PA; great-granddaughter Zoey and great-grandson Cameron. In addition to John’s Parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, George A. Ward, Jr. A private family service will be held at their convenience with full military honors being rendered by the DuBois Area Honor Guard. Final interment to take place at the Reynoldsville Cemetery, Winslow Twp., Jefferson Co. PA. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Snyder – d’Argy Funeral Home, 206 E.
